Implementation of an Interactive Surgical Videos Workshop to Increase Resident Production of Surgical Videos

Purpose: To teach residents fundamentals of surgical video production and increase resident comfort with and interest in making surgical videos.

Background: Surgical videos are an excellent resource for surgeons of all levels for teaching and learning.

Methods: A hands-on workshop was implemented to teach residents the importance of surgical videos and how to create a surgical video using basic video editing software. A total of 16 Ob/Gyn residents at a large academic center were surveyed pre- and post- intervention.

Results: Ninety-four percent of residents use surgical videos in their training and most residents prefer watching surgical videos over reading about surgical procedures. Seventy-five percent of residents were interested in learning how to make a surgical video. Almost all residents had not used video editing software prior to the workshop. After the surgical video workshop, all residents agreed that they would use surgical videos more often. After the workshop, residents were more likely to believe that surgical videos are beneficial in Ob/Gyn training (p=0.02), feel comfortable using basic video editing software (p< 0.01), be interested in making a surgical video (p< 0.01), and plan to make a surgical video (p< 0.01).

Discussions: After an interactive surgical videos workshop, residents feel more comfortable with and are more interested in making surgical videos. Training programs can consider implementing this type of workshop into their curriculum.
