Collaborative Real-time Visual Abstract Generation – a Novel Approach to Virtual Journal Club
Purpose: To integrate visual abstract generation and critique into the virtual journal club for diversification of learning engagement and critical consumption of evidence-based medicine.
Background: The Visual Abstract movement dates back to 2016, pioneered by Annals of Surgery. Since then, many academic journals have integrated dissemination of a visual abstract into their social media presence. As the recent COVID-19 pandemic has shifted resident didactics from traditional classroom learning to a virtual format, we sought to incorporate collaborative real-time generation of a visual abstract as a novel approach to virtual resident journal club.
Methods: We integrated the design and critique of a visual abstract into our resident-based journal club of landmark studies nationally recognized within our clinical specialty. Immediately following the virtual journal club discussion, all residents received a link to a web-based platform that allowed simultaneous, interactive co-editing of a pre-templated visual abstract for the chosen journal article.
Results: Residents provided positive feedback regarding collaborative real-time generation of a visual abstract. Specifically, residents commented that creation of the visual abstract enhanced the journal club as a summarizing exercise. Residents reported new awareness of the visual abstract movement and were empowered to generate visual abstracts for future scholarly projects. Additionally, residents favored the creation of a visual abstract archive for landmark studies within the clinical specialty to use as a pocket reference and as a teaching tool in the future.
Discussions: Utilization of web-based software for collaborative Visual Abstract generation is a well received, novel approach that promotes engagement in a virtual resident journal club.
