Purpose: Evaluate the effectiveness of interdisciplinary fetal heart rate (FHR) strip review sessions in enhancing collaboration between nursing and physician residents.
Background: Effective communication between physicians and nurses improves patient safety. It is essential to have a shared mental model when discussing FHR interpretation and intervention. Collaborative training experiences may further improve communication and a culture of trust between nurses and physician residents.
Methods: Nurses and residents are encouraged to submit FHR tracings for monthly “Strip Review” sessions. The primary purpose of these sessions is to encourage the use of the standard terminology when interpreting FHR tracings. A nurse safety specialist reviews the cases and compiles a digital slideshow. The cases are systematically reviewed, with both nurses and resident physicians functioning as mediators.
Participants completed an anonymous digital qualitative survey to evaluate the impact of these Strip Review Sessions on nursing-resident relationships.
Results: Of the 45 participants who completed the survey, 95% of resident physicians and 76% of nurses found interdisciplinary educational activities to be a valuable use of time. 92% of nurses and 84% of residents reported enjoying “hearing multiple perspectives and approaches.” 65% of residents and 60% of nurses reported improved communication because of the Strip Reviews. 75% of residents reported a better understanding of nursing protocols.
Discussions: Monthly “Strip Reviews” are educational sessions focused on providing accurate evaluation of FHR tracings. Both nurses and residents found the sessions to be of value and reported improved multidisciplinary communication. Providing education in a team environment may enhance collaboration between both groups.
