Health Systems Science: A primer to integrating HSS into your clerkship

Objective: Formal education in health system sciences(HSS) is a relatively new concept, the teaching of which was relegated to the hidden curriculum when most current medical educators were in school. However, HSS is a critical component to healthcare delivery, consisting of population health(social determinants/healthcare equity), value-based care, health care policy/economics, interprofessional skills, informatics, and health system improvement. The importance of HSS is recognized at the national level, evidenced by its inclusion on USMLE steps and OB/GYN NBME shelf.

Most clerkship directors are overwhelmed even covering biomedical and clinical content, thus struggle with conceptualizing how to add additional HSS content. Believe it or not, you are likely teaching some of this content already without realizing it. This session will review the basics of HSS, common ways that HSS is already woven through your curriculum, and share pre-existing resources from APGO and others to help you teach HSS without reinventing the wheel.

Methods: ·         Introductions(5min)

 ·         What is HSS–a primer(using interactive game)(15min)

 ·         1,2,4, all: What are ways HSS already exists at your school/clerkship(10min)

 ·         Small Group activity: Share what HSS teaching tools you\'re aware of/are using(10minutes)

 ·         Large group share: report back on known HSS teaching tools(10minutes)

 ·         Small Group activity: Discussion of the implementation of HSS into your curriculum, the potential barriers and challenges through case based learning.(10minutes)

 ·         Large group discussion: Report back on challenges, problem solving, and best practices for HSS implementation.(10minutes)

 ·         Wrap Up: Take aways/Toolkit(5minutes)

Results: At the end of this session, the attendee will be able to:

Explain the components of each key area of HSS

Review ubiquitous but untapped resources for teaching HSS in your clerkship

Examine current educational elements which may be incorporating HSS content without you realizing it

Share strategies for integrating HSS into clinical and didactic teaching

Conclusion/ Discussion: Come learn about Health Systems Science and how to incorporate it in your clerkship
