Purpose: In our University program, feedback from team members supported the need for improvement of work and learning environment.
Background: In December 2019, we implemented a Teamwork Perception Questionnaire (TPQ) and received 72 mixed-learner responses. The TPQ showed that 43% felt the unit ran efficiently with the biggest opportunity being that just 39% felt that feedback delivery between staff promoted positive interactions and future change. In February 2020, a Team STEPPS implementation plan was started but COVID-19 challenged our initial plans with the need for all virtual meetings. Rather than postponing this initiative, the team developed a way to teach a very interactive teamwork curriculum entirely remotely.
Methods: IRB exemption was obtained to study the efficacy and perceptions to an entirely virtual platform for a team communications curriculum. Nursing and residency educators adapted the AHRQ (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality) curriculum for Team STEPPS to a virtual Zoom format. We held 15 virtual sessions ranging from 25-60 learners each moderated by both a nursing and physician educator. Each session lasted exactly two hours and prioritized interaction, utilizing videos, group discussions and chat functions.
Results: Post training survey-234 responded with 185 nurses and 26 physicians. 80.7% said the activity would improve patient outcomes and 75% believed it would improve their performance.
Discussions: Feedback from the session revealed effective virtual delivery for team work training. “It has taught me how to work better as a team and given me the skills to better communicate with my fellow coworkers.”
