Objective: Ob/Gyn simulation provides valuable learning experiences for students to develop and practice key skills giving them an opportunity to acquire the confidence to be effective team members. Cost constraints may restrict the ability of educational settings to provide the physical models and required supervisory personnel, leading to limited accessibility and educational impact. Development of simple low-cost models that replicate clinical skills and provide self-instruction lessens these barriers while still effectively providing skill development.
The simulations are intended for student self-teaching and are accompanied by a clear and succinct instruction manual. The printed and electronic manual provides background information, description of the simulation, and objectives/goals of the simulation complimenting their clinical experience.
Learning objectives:
- Acquire ideas for incorporating low-cost, assessable simulations in the clerkship
- Demonstrate self-instructed simulation modules
- Become familiar with tools for skill development that can be utilized in the clerkship to assist in meeting LCME requirements
Methods: This demonstration presented as a trade show format will introduce participants to low-cost simulation modules, consisting of models, manual, handouts, and a displayed video of how each module was made and used for student skill development. The elements used to launch a successful low-cost simulation lab, using materials such as plastic tumblers, fabric, clay, softballs, baby doll, etc. Among the eleven modules are speculum exam, cervical exam, suturing and knot tying, and fetal head presentation.
Results: Participants will be able to use of the models and view the video and instruction manual. Presenters will be available for questions.
Conclusion/ Discussion: Participants will have access to the models, hand-outs, an on-line video and instruction manual, enabling you to make your own low-cost self-instructed simulation lab and soar to the moon with a slingshot!
