Objective: The UME to GME Review Committee (Coalition for Physician Accountability) recommends that
structured evaluation letters replace all letters of recommendation (LORs) as a universal tool in the
residency program application process. Many specialties have already adopted this practice. In line
with these recommendations, the OBGYN Standardized Letter of Evaluation (SLOE) has been
developed to provide a more transparent, honest and equitable assessment of applicants’ readiness
for residency and achievement of competencies.
The objectives of this workshop are to:
1. Describe key components of the OBGYN SLOE
2. Practice completing a SLOE based on simulated student portfolios
3. Interpret “mock” SLOEs and consider their impact on the residency screening and selection process
Methods: This highly interactive workshop will begin with a background on the development and overview of the
OBGYN SLOE (10 mins). In small groups, participants will practice completing a “mock” SLOE using
simulated student portfolios, or real student applicants whom they have supported with LORs in the past
(20 mins).
Results: Following a debrief on the experience of completing “mock” SLOEs including a discussion of
usability, effectiveness and challenges (10 mins), participants will break-out again into small groups to
interpret “mock” SLOEs from the residency program perspective (20 mins).
Conclusion/ Discussion: We will conclude with a discussion on how the SLOE can be used to support students in their residency application process and how programs can utilize it to achieve a more holistic, equitable, and efficient review process. (15 mins).
