Patient Experience Curriculum in Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Training
Purpose: To implement a patient experience focused course to Obstetrics and Gynecology residents and assess outcomes.
Background: Limited education exists in graduate medical education on the patient experience and their perspectives of care with minimal exposure to HCAHPS and patient satisfaction surveys. The JPS Patient Experience Mastery Program is a course designed to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes about the patient experience. The course had been previously completed by faculty physicians at JPS Health Network with positive results. Implementing the course into resident education could have similar successful outcomes.
Methods: The program consisted of 10 sessions with application-based curriculum centered around proven patient experience tactics. The course was given over one academic year. NRC Health Real Time surveys were utilized to assess patient satisfaction scores before and after the course. Pre and post course self-assessments utilizing a Likert scale evaluated resident knowledge, skills, and attitudes.
Results: Outpatient survey items were analyzed and showed a 5-point improvement increase in these areas: Provider Explanation, Listening, Respect, and Time Spent with Patient. Inpatient Doctor Communication scores also increased. Residents unanimously agreed that the patient’s experience is important and impact patient quality outcomes. Awareness of the tools and skills to improve scores increased after the course. Attitudes and comfort levels to implement the skills also improved.
Discussions: The course offers a novel curriculum in residency training focused on the patient experience. Data from patient care surveys showed direct benefit on patient satisfaction scores across many domains after the completion of the course. Resident self-assessments also reaffirmed positive results in their awareness and ability to implement their skills.
