Redesign of Longitudinal Fourth Year Curriculum: Working toward Milestone One

OBJECTIVES: To standardize and supplement our eight month Longitudinal Curriculum and to assess feasibility as well as student comfort, skills and knowledge gained during the experience.

METHODOLOGY: Senior students are assigned to a faculty preceptor and meet weekly in their clinics (OB, Oncology, Health Department) over 8 months. A standard curriculum, based on national Ob/Gyn objectives, with assigned reading was created. Seven 2 hour basic skills sessions were developed and scheduled during evening hours with a faculty facilitator. After IRB approval, students were surveyed at the beginning of the curriculum for comfort with skills and knowledge; this will be repeated post-curriculum. Specific knowledge and skills are also assessed pre-and post-skills sessions. Participation in the surveys and skills sessions is voluntary during this pilot. Students on standard one-month Acting Internships were also allowed to participate in the surveys and skills sessions.

RESULTS: During AY 2012-2013, 5 longitudinal AIs and 5 standard one-month AIs were scheduled. All completed the pre-curriculum survey. Three skills workshops have occurred with variable attendance due to residency interviews. Improvement in both knowledge and skills were noted post-skills sessions compared to pre-tests.

CONCLUSIONS: Short term data demonstrates an improvement in performance pre- and post-skills workshops. Adherence to the workshop schedule has been difficult for some students. To date, the enhanced curriculum has been well received.
