Objective/ Background: The fast paced, unpredictable environment of labor and delivery (L&D) can be a barrier to medical student education. Medical students identify L&D as the most stressful learning environment during their OBGYN clerkship - with the pace, unpredictable nature of the environment, and amount of new required knowledge cited as key contributors. Chalk talks are a useful teaching tool in these settings as they require limited time and resources. However, effective chalk talks require advanced preparation. In this hands-on workshop, participants will: -Identify barriers to teaching on L&D -Explore strategies to construct effective chalk talks -Develop and practice a chalk talk on a common obstetrics topic
Methods: Agenda: -Introduction (5 min) -Small Groups: (5 min) Participants share their experiences as educators on L&D via polling software. -Large Group: (5 min) Facilitators recap poll results and introduce chalk talks as a useful tool -Large Group: (10min) Facilitators highlight strategies for creating and implementing effective chalk talks, including supporting educational theory frameworks. -Small groups: -Participants create mini chalk talks (15 min) -Groups role play giving talks on L&D; roles include attending/resident, medical student, and observers (5 min) -Small group debrief (5 min) -Large Group: (15min) Small groups report out. -Closing and Questions: (10 min) - Participants share one environment where they hope to utilize the chalk talk strategies discussed in their future practice with a peer
