Enhancing gender equity in OBGYN curricula: Using the impact effort matrix to triage course updates

Objective/ Background: In an effort to promote inclusivity and accuracy of medical education, medical schools across the country are encountering a need to update educational materials that reflect the principles of antiracism and gender equity. There is not yet a streamlined, efficient process to undertake such curricular updates and these efforts can take time and effort, which is challenging in a busy academic field.

Methods: In collaboration with the UCSF Anti-Oppression Curriculum Initiative (AOCi), we applied the impact effort matrix to evaluate and update all existing pre-recorded didactics utilized in the UCSF OBGYN clerkship. This workshop will provide an overview of our process for triaging and editing or re-recording educational videos through student-faculty collaboration. Specifically, we will discuss how to apply the UCSF AOCi Curricular Review Tool to evaluate current curricular content and subsequently categorize videos as “quick wins,” “major projects,” “schedule,” or “rethink.” Through literature review and application of AOCi materials, lectures were either edited, re-recorded, or accompanied by written disclaimers to include gender-inclusive language. We will also discuss utilizing an embedded feedback tool to inform future directions of the project.

Results: Interactive components: Participants will be invited to reflect on processes undertaken at their respective home institutions to update curricula in alignment with the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Conclusion/ Discussion: Take-home product (e.g. toolkit, resources, rubrics, handouts, pocket guides): Participants will receive the UCSF AOCi Curricular Review toolkit, embedded feedback tool, and a summary of resources to reference in deciding appropriate gender inclusive language to use in educational materials.
