What is the Secret Ingredient? Attendee Perceptions of Virtual Grand Rounds

Purpose: This study aims to explore the attendee experience with and perceptions of virtual grand rounds as it compares to in-person grand rounds.

 

Background: Academic departments across the country transitioned from in-person grand rounds(IPGR) to virtual grand rounds (VGR) during the Covid-19 pandemic. Though this change allowed Grand Rounds to continue, the perception of participants is not known.

 

Methods: A group of subject matter experts developed a cross-sectional electronic survey comparing VGR and IPGR. After IRB review, local leadership sent the survey to all members of 5 geographically diverse academic ob/gyn departments in May 2021. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data.

 

Results:  Of 591 potential participants, 306(52%) individuals responded(65 residents, 21 fellows, 208 faculty/APPs and 9 research staff). Overall, 91% of respondents were satisfied with VGR, with 60% feeling very satisfied.

 

Compared to IPGR, 90% of respondents were more likely to attend VGR and 49% were more likely to ask questions at VGR. Presentation quality was rated the same/better than IPGR by 91% of respondents. Presenter prominence with VGR was perceived as the same/better by 93%. Multitasking was more common with VGR(91% reported more likely), 69% stated the sense of community was worse with VGR. Only 22% of respondents preferred all-virtual going forward.

 

Discussions: Overall, VGR was well-received. Respondents reported being more likely to attend with no reduction in quality. Disadvantages of VGR include being more likely to multitask and lost sense of community. Looking forward, most preferred a hybrid model of grand rounds.
