RHEcourse: Evaluation of a Learning Management System for Reproductive Health Curricula

Purpose: To report on a customizable learning management system for sexual and reproductive health (SRH) curricula.

Background: RHEcourse is a free education platform where instructors can assign SRH curricula from Innovating Education in Reproductive Health (IERH) and track learners’ progress. Instructors can create courses from the IERH library or external content, track learner activity, and evaluate their learning through site-provided or custom tests.

Methods: We record basic registration data for all RHEcourse users and surveyed instructors during the COVID-19 pandemic regarding RHEcourse’s utility and efficacy for their teaching.

Results: Currently, 225 instructors use the RHEcourse platform. They teach residents (n=189, 84%), medical students (n=181, 80%), physicians in practice (n=73, 32%), nurse practitioner students (n=35, 16%), midwifery students (n=24, 11%), and nurses in practice (n=50, 22%). One hundred eighty-seven (83%) have created a total of 575 courses with an average of 3.1 courses per instructor (maximum 24, SD 3.5).  Among 40 instructors who reported on their use of RHEcourse during the COVID 19 pandemic, 48% reported using the content to replace or supplement in-person learning. Sixty-two percent were extremely satisfied by the effectiveness in meeting learning goals, and 90% intend to continue to use the system in the future. Many reported being extremely satisfied with the quality of the content (83%), ease of use (42%), ease of access for learners (62%), and ease of tracking learners (39%).

Discussions: RHEcourse is an effective and useful system for instructors delivering virtual curricula. Future evaluation will survey instructors and learners about their experience using the platform to continue improving the user experience.
