Augmenting Standard Curriculum Using Virtual Didactics in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowships

Purpose: This study aims to assess the efficacy of a multi-center Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS) virtual didactics program over the course of 3 years.

Background:
The COVID-19 pandemic has tested the traditional education system, underscoring the importance of productive virtual learning platforms. We would like to report our experience in running a virtual didactics program across multiple FPMRS fellowships nationwide, with a particular focus on its sustainability over 3 years. Cooper’s FPMRS program launched the monthly program in 2017 to enhance the fellowship education experience. Senior faculty members from 6 institutions use a web-based video conferencing platform to discuss FPMRS topics.

Methods: A multi-center survey-based study was conducted to assess the efficacy of a virtual didactics program. Redcap was utilized to email anonymous surveys to participants. Descriptive statistics were performed.

Results: We achieved an 82% response rate to our survey (12 fellows and 16 attendings). Primary learning styles were visual, tactile/kinesthetic, auditory, and reading/writing in 42.9%, 25%, 21.4%, and 10.7% of participants, respectively. The majority of respondents reported participation in the program using visual and auditory aspects of the program. On average, the respondents reported an 81.6% overall satisfaction with the program. Nearly 90% of participants reported the greatest advantage of the program was learning from clinical experiences of faculty outside of their own institutions.

Discussions:
Participants in a multi-center FPMRS virtual didactics program report a high level of satisfaction with the program despite varied learning styles.
