The Use of Podcasts to Teach Genetics: An Alternative Method for Teaching OB/GYN Residents

2012 ASL Abstract

OBJECTIVE: This pilot study tested a novel curriculum in genetics for OB-Gyn residents.

STUDY DESIGN: Residents on the required 6 week MFM rotation were randomly assigned to either a new genetics curriculum that included five 20-minute genetics lectures in a Podcast format that could be accessed by iPhone (n=4), or a traditional genetics reading list (n=4).Both curricula cover the same basic genetics topics and meet the CREOG educational objectives. Subjects were instructed to access their assigned curricula on their own time, and were tested on
knowledge both before and after their educational intervention.

RESULTS: Subjects in both groups scored < 50% on the pre-test. Post-test scores were similar (<50%). The majority (3/ 4 of the reading list group and ½ of the Podcast group) did not complete their assignments. No conclusions could be made about learning styles and preference in relation to test scores.

CONLUSION: This pilot study suggests that Ob-Gyn residents lack sufficient basic genetic knowledge and may be unmotivated to pursue a genetics curriculum on their own time. Further studies are needed to determine if newer technologies such as Podcasts would improve knowledge of genetics and how to increase motivation for self-directed learning.
