Objective/ Background: Health system science teaching has become more explicit in medical school curricula in recent years. At the same time, medical student exposure to abortion care may be severely limited by rules or structures of their school, hospital institution, or state in the Post-Dobbs environment. Using a health systems approach to teach about abortion care provides an opportunity for curricular efficiency on these two very important topics.
Methods: We present case-based curricula to teach medical students about the range of abortion restrictions and how to best provide for patients seeking abortion care. During this roundtable participants will learn how to integrate a health systems approach to developing an abortion access curriculum that can be tailored to their local challenges.
Results: Agenda: In this roundtable, we will present case-based curricula we developed at our institutions, including demonstrating how students were encouraged to find and access resources to determine the status of any local restrictions. Interactive component: Participants will discuss the local challenges that they face regarding providing and teaching medical students about abortion care. We will discuss how these can be integrated into case-based learning scenarios.
Conclusion/ Discussion: Participants will be given a toolkit of sample health systems case-based learning scenarios that can be taken back to their home institutions and modified as appropriate for their local setting.
