Objective: Each year, more students enter the couples match. However, limited data exist for faculty advisors about how to best coach these students, especially since most students will match with partners entering non-OBGYN specialties. Additionally, while there are specific rules and guidelines for the couples match process itself, there is limited information to guide couples and advisors. Advisors might also be called to mediate the difficult conversations and compromises relating to the couples match that is compounded by the balancing of not one, but two medical careers. In this interactive session, we will provide an ‘interstellar map’ for navigating the couples match, discuss the personal experiences of the presenters and participants, and share strategies regarding best advising practices for couples for a successful match.
Methods: The workshop will use interactive discussions with group members to address topics in the agenda. Depending on the size, we may do \'break out pairs\' then a large group share as well.
Results: At the end - participants will be able to:
- Review the specific requirements for couples match applicants in both ERAS and NRMP
- Share effective communication and advising skills to help your advisee and their partner navigate the couples match
- Share common strategies, tools and resources for students in the couples match with regards to application development, program lists, interviewing and rank list
- Troubleshoot common couples-match challenges and dilemmas
