Objective: As residency programs move away from the ability to use USMLE Step scores for applicant screening and selection, the question of what factors rise to the top for competitiveness remains. Given Program Directors consider interpersonal skills, competencies and characteristics extracted from recommendation letters, and leadership qualities as factors important for ranking (NRMP, 2020), it becomes critical to not only created opportunities to allow for applicants to demonstrate success in these domains, but also to maximize development opportunities that will add to long-term professional development and ultimately improvement in the healthcare system. By creating a variety of professional development activities and strategically making these opportunities available to students, students have more options to participate in areas they find personally relevant to their development.
