ABSRACT: The ACGME has noted the need for all trainees to have achieved minimum standards during medical school and has developed the Competency and Milestone project. The Milestone project is designed to track competencies throughout training with specified goals to be met at designated times in training. Milestone 1 addresses what brand new interns should possess in the way of skills, knowledge and basic abilities. Milestone 1 for OBGYN has been developed by a Joint APGO/CREOG task force with a toolbox of evaluation and certification tools planned. After polling clerkship site directors and graduating students at the Uniformed Services University (USU) School of Medicine, a Capstone “Boot Camp” was developed to assure that all perceived deficiencies were met by students entering OBGYN internship. Through the utilization of the APGO online toolbox and the development of Simulations/OSCEs/Didactics locally at USU and WRB to fill in educational gaps, the finalized curriculum will be for use with the graduating class of 2014. The curriculum is a 2 week capstone course for graduating medical students that are starting an OBGYN internship. The curriculum combines in person didactics, online mini-lectures, hands on simulation, real life patient encounters, and standardized certification (BLS/ACLS/NRP). Goal is that all APGO/CREOG Joint Task Force Milestone One Didactic and Procedural Skill objectives will be met as measured by graduating student self-assessment. These graduating students and receiving Program Directors will be surveyed during ensuing internship to determine efficacy of the program and to solicit areas for improvement.
