Night Float Implementation in Obstetrics Clerkship to Promote Continuity of Care and Medical Student Satisfaction

Objective(s): To determine whether participation and satisfaction varied by time of day during the medical student clerkship.
Study Design: Cross-sectional survey of third-year medical students completing their obstetrics clerkships. The survey used statements with Likert-scale responses to evaluate satisfaction. We assessed continuity of care using medical record review of student documentation over a 2-year period. Survey and chart review findings were compared by daytime vs. nighttime sessions and, for chart review data, before vs. after night float implementation.
Results: A total of _% of the students completed the questionnaire. Satisfaction varied/ did not vary between daytime and nighttime sessions. Database review showed statistically more deliveries attended by medical students on night float than day shift (P≤ 0.05) and significantly more chart documentation on night float than day shift (P≤ 0.05).
Conclusion: Third year medical students’ satisfaction and participation on the obstetrics clerkship improved significantly during night float.
