Through the Haze: A Search for Clarity in Medical Student Grading

 - Explore novel methods to approach the challenging of bias in grading

 - Investigate the correlation between bias in grading and suboptimal learning environment

Methods: We will present data on bias in OBGYN clinical grading, both nationally as well as at our institution. We will share our experience implementing methods to mitigate bias in grading, including: diversifying the grading committee, implicit bias training for committee members, deidentifying student evaluations and eliminating gender pronouns from evaluations.

We will hold a mock grading committee for attendees to directly experience these various strategies.

Results: We will foster an interactive discussion in which participants reflect upon insight gained from the mock grading committee, share their historic grading practices and explore ways in which novel approaches may be implemented at their home institutions. We will discuss role of grading bias in the overall medical student learning environment and opportunities to improve learning environment.

Conclusion/ Discussion: Closing comments and future directions in eliminating grading bias.
