Revising a rubric from the ashes: how experience with assessment tools leads to meaningful modification

Objective: 21st century medicine is based on a significant but competing number of resources and medical literature.  Despite substantial changes in medicine and in medical education, the most common OB/GYN clerkship evaluation components – clinical performance and National Board of Medical Examiners Subject Examination score – have remained largely unchanged over the years.  At our institutions we have developed novel tools to standardize the assessment of students in the practice of modern medicine.  Such complex assessment tools have the potential to evaluate critical thinking skills; however, such tools must be designed in such a way that they assess the intended outcomes.  Therefore, novel curricular elements must be reviewed, modified, and clarified by multiple experts to achieve content validity and fairness.

 

Methods: Agenda:

 1. Presenters from different institutions will each present how they implemented a new assessment tool for OB/GYN clerkship students at their institution. (20 minutes)

 2. We will introduce common errors in assessment development and have an interactive discussion about difficulties of evaluating critical thinking skills to meaningfully discriminate between learners. (25 minutes)

 3. Presenters will offer tools to validate novel assessment instruments.  Participants will then serve as “clinical experts” and practice rubric revision and validation through the process of calculating item Content Validity Index. (30 minutes)

 

Results: Interactive discussion during segment 2.  Audience participation as “content experts” in rubric revision during segment 3.

 

Conclusion/ Discussion: QR codes will be provided to additional material for future rubric validation at time of presentation.
