Honoring the Queer Experience as an Introduction to Reproductive Health and Justice

Objective: Learners consistently desire more exposure to the health care needs of gender and sexual minority (GSM). Faculty with expertise in GSM medicine may not be available, and medical educators may lack knowledge, skills or comfort. The pandemic has catalyzed development of digital platforms, prompting rapid change and acceptance of asynchronous learning, remote patient interactions, and digital classrooms. These modalities can be leveraged to address such gaps. In this interactive workshop, participants will explore teaching gender-diverse experiences as foundational introduction to reproductive health using innovative technologies. Participants will collaboratively work to design curricula, from needs assessment through evaluation. We will discuss barriers and develop solutions unique to gender-diverse reproductive healthcare, then consider how these pedagogical approaches are transferable to reproductive justice.

Methods: This 75-minute, highly interactive session will utilize case-based learning to introduce participants to the unique healthcare needs of LGBTQ+ individuals, foundational reproductive justice, applied motivational learning theory, and emerging educational technologies. Learners will be provided with cases that span the curricular development cycle from needs assessment to multi-regional implementation. A brief agenda for the session may be found below:

 - Introduction

 - Describe the Problem:

 -- Curricular Gaps

 -- Novel technologies

 -- Emergence of the Pandemic

 - First Exercise: developing a report for the dean on GSM health

 - Curriculum Development:

 --  Applied Motivational Theory

 -- Kern’s Curricular Strategies

 --  Keller’s ARCS Model

 - Novel Platforms:

 -- Online Small Groups

 - Second Exercise: implementing across campuses

 - Our Experiences Across Institutions

 - Summary and Toolkit: applying lessons learned at home

Results: Through participation in this workshop, learners will be able to:

 1.        Describe the reproductive healthcare needs of gender-diverse populations

 2.        Develop strategies to inspire autonomous motivation

 3.        Apply development strategies to novel teaching platforms

Conclusion/ Discussion: The aim of this session is to explore how the authentic experiences of queer people, especially queer people of color, demonstrate the intricacies of reproductive healthcare and the essential nature of universal reproductive justice across medicine. We hope to empower learners to highlight and acknowledge the lived experiences of those in dual marginalized communities as the bedrock of reproductive healthcare at their institutions. Participants will be provided with case studies, motivational strategies, gender-diverse teaching toolkits, podcast resources, and interactive lecture tools for translation to th
