The Development and Implementation of a Transgender Care Curriculum and Clinic for OBGYN residents

Purpose: Our purpose was to develop a formalized transgender care curriculum for OBGYN residents. In addition, we established gynecologic services within an already existing LGBT clinic.

 

Background: Gynecologic care for the transgender patient is often perceived as a gendered and dysphoric experience by patients. While in the last several years CREOG has implemented objectives regarding care for transgender patients, it remains an area of limited resource and training for obstetrics and gynecology residents. One way to provide comprehensive care for transgender patients is by ensuring that obstetrics and gynecology residents have a thorough understanding of the healthcare needs that must be addressed. 

 

Methods: We worked alongside providers in a newly established LGBT clinic to implement gynecologic services and a formalized transgender care didactic curriculum. The curriculum and clinical services focused on the following: preventative well-person care, contraception counseling, fertility counseling, and pelvic pain interventions. Residents who completed their rotation with the LGBT clinic completed a questionnaire addressing comfort and knowledge when caring for transgender patients.

 

Results: Preliminary results show that residents\' comfort with transgender healthcare issues improved greatly after having the opportunity to train in an interdisciplinary setting that provided transgender care. In addition, knowledge and understanding of transgender health improved with the implementation of a formal curriculum.

 

Discussions: Our findings suggest that without formalized training and experiences, OBGYN residents lack 

comfort and knowledge in regards to transgender health care services. We hope to utilize our initial data to be able to develop curriculums that other institutions can implement.
