Purpose: To assess the acceptability of a novel microlearning curriculum for incoming OB/Gyn interns prior to residency.
Background: Medical schools and groups like APGO/CREOG and ACOG have sought to create “ready for day one” curricula targeting new OB/Gyn residents. However, these initiatives vary in their contents, accessibility, and efficacy. We created a microlearning curriculum available to all incoming OB/Gyn interns and assessed its acceptability.
Methods: This was a prospective pre-/post-intervention survey study evaluating the 2021 MS4 to R1 transition. Participants received text messages with links to additional educational content (i.e., infographics, podcasts) on weekdays for 25 days. We assessed acceptability using satisfaction scores on a Likert Scale and self-described use of each modality.
Results: 1056 incoming R1s completed a pre-course survey. 970 (91.9%) had never used an SMS-based curriculum. 858 (81.3%) completed the entire course. Item engagement rate was 53.3% (29,422 responses/ 55,159 opportunities).
426 (40.4%) completed a post-intervention survey. Participants found that the curriculum was an excellent resource (391/426, 91.8%) and enjoyable (395/424, 93.2%). Participants reported using SMS a median of 5 days/week (IQR 4-5), infographics 4 days/week (IQR 3-5), podcasts 3 days/week (IQR 2-5), website 1 day/week (IQR 0-3), and social media 0 days/week (IQR 0-1).
Discussions: This novel curriculum was utilized by a majority of incoming interns who overwhelmingly felt it was acceptable and enjoyable.
