Effect of clinical sub-rotation site on OB/GYN clerkship final grades

Purpose: To determine whether clinical sub-rotation site affects OB/GYN clerkship grades

Background: At our institution, students complete three subrotations at various sites (Site A, B, C) during their OB/GYN clerkship. Minimal overlap of faculty exists between sites, resulting in students being evaluated by different faculty members depending on their site rotation combination. All students rotate at site A. Medical schools are required to ensure “Comparability of Education/Assessment” (LCME Element 8.7).

Methods: 2019 clerkship grades were analyzed for all students completing OB/GYN Clerkship at our institution (N&#3f214< ![if !supportAnnotations] >[GJT1]< ![endif] > ). Exclusions: grade deferred, non-standard grading scale, non-rotation at site-A. 211 students were included. Chi-square analysis was used to evaluate final clerkship grade variations between groups.

Results: Of the students who rotated at Site-B, 31% achieved Honors compared to 38% of those who did not rotate at Site-B. For Site-C, 36% achieved Honors compared to 31% of those who did not rotate at Site-C. These differences were not statistically significant. The average numerical grade for the clinical portion of the rotation was the same for all groups (83%).

Discussions: Despite potential differences in grading stringency between faculty members and potential for varying clinical experiences per site, clinical grades did not differ based on rotation site. Our results show that achieving comparability of education/assessment across sites is possible. Further investigation is needed to determine whether individual graders significantly influence final clerkship grades.
