Surgical education from World Series Champs? How shared lessons can better prepare medical students

Objective: COVID-19 highlighted the need for adaptable surgical education. Sports teams faced the similar challenge of developing skills with restricted hands-on training opportunities. Shared challenges offer opportunity to improve surgical education curricula. This roundtable will provide educators with a virtual surgical education lecture mini-series, and techniques that the Los Angeles (LA) Dodgers used in their 2020 World Series Championship season.  Our objective is to expand access to surgical education to medical students of diverse sociodemographic and educational backgrounds.

Methods: \"We piloted a didactic entitled “Surgical principles

Results: techniques

Conclusion/ Discussion: and anatomy in gynecologic surgery” during a virtual elective for visiting fourth year medical students from groups underrepresented in medicine. We subsequently adapted this to include video review application sessions. These sessions offered insight into students’ strengths and weaknesses in our covered topics: principles, techniques, and anatomy. We introduced this checklist of concepts in parallel to the Dodgers utilized data tracking on player performance.\"

Related APGO Publications/Modules: Our virtual surgical curriculum intended for fourth year medical students entering Obstetrics & Gynecology residency utilizes concepts from remote athletic coaching. We feel this is addresses the need for accessible and flexible education in fundamentals of gynecologic surgery for incoming residents., Our curriculum is ongoing, and objective data on course feedback is not yet available.
