A Bold New World: Creation of a Longitudinal Curriculum for OB/GYN Residents
Purpose: The objective of this project was to develop and implement a standard education curriculum for OB/GYN residents.
Background: Resident education, which includes both clinical training under faculty supervision and independent learning, is an integral component of GME training. The nature of OB/GYN training is fast-paced with long work hours, and residents have limited time for independent learning. While the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) educational objectives are an excellent source to outline independent learning objectives, there is no standardized curriculum that is widely utilized amongst GME programs.
Methods: We utilized the CREOG educational objectives to create separate Obstetrics and Gynecology curriculums. After establishing a “theme of the month” for the academic year, specific weekly educational topics were created. The curriculum for each week was designed to identify reading material, questions, and teaching lecture slides that would benefit both junior and senior residents. On average, five resources were made available for each topic of the week. We measured improvement in CREOG scores in our residency program from the previous year.
Results: Average CREOG scores from the 2019-2020 academic year improved by 10 points compared to the previous academic year. Over half of the residents in our program (54%) scored at or above the mean compared to 29% the year prior.
Discussions: A standardized OB/GYN curriculum, involving a variety of different learning methods, is highly effective in improving resident learning. Based on resident feedback, the curriculum was heavily utilized and received positive feedback from all PGY levels.
