Using Telemedicine to Brighten Interprofessional Education and Outpatient Care
Objective: The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated rapid deployment of telemedicine services at the same time that practice staffing was minimized and medical and advanced practice nursing students were removed physically from the clinical learning environment. Students often get limited exposure to outpatient prenatal and postpartum care as well as health system structure education. Telemedicine can be used to meet practice needs and the needs of interprofessional learners.
Workshop Agenda: • The workshop will begin with large group discussion of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on prenatal and postpartum care and the utilization of telemedicine as a means to provide this outpatient care (10 min).
• Participants will divide into small groups and brainstorm ways medical and advanced nursing students working remotely can participate in telemedicine (20 min).
• Facilitators will share how students working remotely were deployed at their practice to meet health system needs and learning needs of the students (20 min).
• Participants will work through examples of curricular needs that could be strengthened through telemedicine (15 min) and asked to identify and share aspects of their own curricula that can be addressed using a similar model (10 min).
Interactive Component: Participants will be given examples of curricular needs that present opportunities for telemedicine and remote patient care and discuss how interprofessional students could be integrated into telemedicine to meet those needs.
Take Home Product: Participants will be given a copy of the existing curriculum utilized at Penn as a telemedicine elective. Group brainstorming ideas will be documented and shared.
