Empowering Faculty to Integrate Equity and Inclusivity into the Ob/Gyn Clerkship

Objective: Solar Power (Innovation)

Workshop Agenda:
Participants will utilize a toolkit for creating inclusive curricula to review and revitalize clerkship didactic materials.

Interactive Component: Traditionally, case presentations start with a patient’s age, gender, and race.  Even this simple practice may lead learners to incorrectly and harmfully operationalize social constructs as intrinsic, biological predisposition to disease. Promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion is a continual process, rather than a one-time event, and therefore must be integrated into medical curricula.  As we expand our understanding of the devastating impact of structural racism and implicit bias on patients who identify as members of marginalized groups, promoting anti-racism and strategies that limit expressions of bias must be foundational in our clerkship curricula. Our objective is to give participants in this workshop tools to reform pedagogical content to appropriately contextualize discussions of race in Ob/Gyn and reflect the diversity and lived experiences of our patients, students, and providers.  This workshop will give participants the knowledge and skills to revitalize content including language, images, case presentations and evidence in their existing clerkship materials.
