Electronic CME: Register online to take advantage of our easy electronic process for CME credit, which will enable you to scan your QR code at the CME desk daily for credits. On-site registrants will sign in manually.

APGO ALUMNI SOCIETY: KEEPING US CONNECTED

Have you joined the new APGO Alumni Society yet? We have created this society to keep APGO leaders and Scholars Program graduates connected with other alumni through newsletters and other special events like the annual Alumni Bash held at the CREOG & APGO Annual Meeting.

Alumni Society Membership is open to: graduates of the APGO Academic Scholars and Leaders Program, the APGO Surgical Education Scholars Program, its precursor programs, Introductions to Hysteroscopy and Electrosurgery, as well as alumni volunteer leaders of the APGO Board of Directors, Development Committee, Undergraduate Medical Education Committee and Testing, Technology and Diversity Committees.

By staying connected, you will foster life-long friendships, advance the careers of APGO members and help shape what the member-led Alumni Society can become. Play an active role in the evolution of the Society by helping to choose your leaders. Society leaders will work together with the APGO leadership and staff to plan events and build an active and engaged community!

SUCCESSFUL FACULTY DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR

Earlier this month, APGO kicked off the new year with the 2019 APGO Martin L. Stone, MD, Faculty Development Seminar (FDS). The scenic Hyatt Regency Maui in Lahaina, Hawaii drew 249 attendees, and this year’s theme, “The Road to Hana: Your Journey to Educational Paradise” boasted a program full of keynotes, workshops and round tables that left attendees inspired and ready to take on the new year.

ASL 20TH ANNIVERSARY CAMPAIGN EXCEEDS GOAL

APGO is proud to share that with donations received and pledges promised, we have reached our goal for the APGO Academic Scholars and Leaders (ASL) 20th Anniversary Campaign. Thanks to everyone who donated and pledged, the Frank T. Stritter, PhD, Endowed Faculty Fund will ensure the involvement of highly qualified professional educators and sustain the scholastic excellence of the ASL program.

ASL is targeted to the needs of aspiring and current education program directors (clerkship, residency, fellowship) and core faculty educators who are committed to expanding and deepening the impact of their contributions.

NEW FREE RESOURCE: BASIC SCIENCE VIDEOS WITH COMPANION TEACHING SCRIPTS

APGO is pleased to announce the launch of a new teaching tool! In July 2017, APGO awarded two grants of $50,000 each to APGO member institutions to develop a series of short educational videos and teaching scripts to vertically integrate basic science topics into the ob-gyn clerkship. Each project team developed 15 videos with a companion teaching script for each video.

These 30 videos and scripts provide a nice resource for basic sciences teaching as medical schools transition to earlier introduction to clinical training and competency-based curricula. Basic sciences remain critical to clinical medicine and should be taught across the entire medical education experience. Vertical integration of the basic sciences into clinical medicine during the ob-gyn clerkship will stimulate deeper learning and solidify students’ understanding of fundamental principles.

NEW MEMBER RESOURCE: APGO CASE-BASED CURRICULUM FOR MILESTONE 1

This new resource, written by members of APGO’s Undergraduate Medical Education Committee (UMEC), offers a complete curriculum for organizing a Transitions to Residency Course for fourth year medical students entering obstetrics and gynecology. The interactive cases allow teachers to develop lesson plans based on the currently published specialty specific Milestones from the ACGME as well the Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) developed by the AAMC.

Together, the five cases cover all of Milestone 1 and all EPAs. Users can view entire cases in full, or individual tasks (with an educator checklist). A search function can filter for specific Milestones and EPAs in the cases, so the curriculum can be adapted for different learners.

The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine has named Lea Learman, MD, PhD, as its next dean. Doctor Learman is a longtime APGO leader, and currently serves as Chair of the Academic Scholars and Leaders (ASL) Advisory Committee.

“I’m honored by the opportunity to serve as dean of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. In its first decade of existence, it has built a solid foundation drawing on the strengths of both an outstanding public research university and an outstanding private health system,” said Doctor Learman. “This unique public-private partnership makes Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine uniquely positioned to prepare future physicians for the changing health care landscape and to become a national leader in medical education. And now, as the newest college of Virginia Tech, the medical school is poised to develop new collaborations with the university.”

NEW ON THE APGO APPLE TREE BLOG

A Global Approach to Medical Education

For APGO member Karin Wollschlaeger, MD, a calling in women’s health education has always meant serving others – learners and patients – on a global scale. Throughout her career, Doctor Wollschlaeger, a clinical associate professor at Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver, Colorado, has traveled on medical missions to Ecuador, Peru, India, Nepal, Zimbabwe, and South Sudan, and spent a year prior to her residency working with World Relief in Cambodia. Her commitment to working with underprivileged populations around the globe has led her to embark on a new project she hopes will instill the same passion for service in her residents. Doctor Wollschlaeger is currently developing an ob-gyn global health elective at Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre (ALMC) in Arusha, Tanzania.
