Meeting Recap: The 2019 Martin L. Stone, MD, Faculty Development Seminar
Earlier this month, APGO kicked off the new year with the 2019 APGO Martin L. Stone, MD, Faculty Development Seminar (FDS). The scenic Hyatt Regency Maui in Lahaina, Hawaii drew 249 attendees, and this year’s theme, “The Road to Hana: Your Journey to Educational Paradise” boasted a program full of keynotes, workshops and round tables that left attendees inspired and ready to take on the new year.
Plenary Sessions
At the opening session, the Martin L. Pernoll, MD, Educator Plenary, Victor Strecher, PhD, MPH (Professor, University of Michigan) welcomed meeting participants with, “Life on Purpose: How Living for What Matters Most Changes Everything.” Susan Skochelak, MD, MPH (Group Vice President, Medical Education American Medical Association), delivered Monday’s second plenary talk, “Innovations in Medical Education: Rethinking the UME to GME Continuum.” Tuesday’s keynotes included the Susan M. Cox, MD, and Doug Morris President’s Breakfast with Maya Hammoud, MD, MBA (Professor, University of Michigan), “Conscious Leadership: Balancing Self, Family and Work to Achieve Success,” Thomas Nasca, MD, MACP (President and Chief Executive Officer Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education), presented “Profession, Professional Identity, and Professionalism;” Catherine Morrison, JD (Morrison Associates) presented “Navigating Negotiations in Academic Medicine: Using a Framework to Get What You Need.” The final plenary talk of the meeting was given by John Luk, MD (Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Medical Education, Assistant Dean for Interprofessional Integration, University of Texas Austin), titled “Planning for Successful Clinical Interprofessional Education.”
Lunchtime Learning Session
Always popular, the Lunchtime Learning Session lets participants enjoy an entertaining and insightful presentation over lunch. This year’s talk was “Wellness and Resiliency: What Do We Need? How Do We Get There?” from Sheryl Heron, MD, MPH, Professor and Vice Chair of Administration, Emergency Medicine, Assistant Dean Medical & Student Affairs, Emory University). Doctor Heron examined the causes behind physician burnout and shared strategies to improve well-being.
Clerkship Directors’ School
Before the start of every Faculty Development Seminar, APGO holds the first two sessions of the three-part Clerkship Directors’ School. Developed and directed by the APGO Undergraduate Medical Education Committee (UMEC), the Clerkship Directors’ School helps new and established clerkship directors prepare for the role and brush up on teaching and administrative skills. The interactive Innovation Station was held during the program. During this session, participants were introduced to low-fidelity simulations, aids and tools that can be implemented into the clerkship at their home institutions. The third part of the course, which features more advanced content, is held each year at the CREOG & APGO Annual Meeting in February/March.
Special Events
While the program was packed with educational sessions and abundant learning opportunities, FDS attendees also enjoyed some down time during two recreational events. Sunday Night’s Welcome Reception celebrated retiring APGO Executive Director Donna Wachter. And in “luau” of the annual 5K fundraiser, APGO hosted a comedy show Monday night, featuring the Hawaiian King of Comedy, Bo Irvine. Both events encouraged meeting attendees to relax and connect with each other after a strenuous day of learning.
William N.P. Herbert, MD, Promising Educator Award
During the meeting, APGO recognizes junior faculty who exhibit a bright future in women’s health education with the William N.P. Herbert, MD, Promising Educator Award. This year, APGO recognized Melissa Wong, MD, Associate Clinical Professor, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, for her demonstrated potential as a future academic ob-gyn leader.
APGO Academic Scholars and Leaders Program
The 2020 graduating class of APGO Academic Scholars and Leaders Program held their first meeting prior to the start of the seminar. Course participants will meet for several more didactic sessions during the 15-month program which is designed to develop outstanding ob-gyn educators and administrators. This group of scholars marks the 22nd class of the APGO Academic Scholars and Leaders Program.
During the meeting, Development Committee Chair Nadine Katz, MD, announced the successful completion of the ASL 20th Anniversary Campaign. In late 2017, APGO launched the APGO Academic Scholars and Leaders Program Frank T. Stritter, PhD, Endowed Faculty Fund Campaign to commemorate the 20th year of the program in 2018. The fund, named for Doctor Stritter’s numerous contributions to the program as its director for the first 18 years, will ensure the involvement of highly qualified professional educators and sustain the scholastic excellence of the program for years to come. Thanks to generous donations from APGO members past and present, the goal of $550,000 was exceeded.
Exhibitors
For the first time at FDS, table-top exhibitors were invited to the meeting. APGO would like to thank Cooper, AMAG and Pathy for sharing information about educational tools, equipment and resources to enhance the medical education curriculum.

The 2019 Faculty Development Seminar will be held January 11 – 14, 2020 at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point in Bonita Springs, Florida. APGO will announce the call for abstracts in the coming weeks.
