Objective: To decrease medical student refusal on the OBGyn core clerkship through the use of student
identification cards (biocards).

Conclusion/ Discussion: The University of Iowa Department of OBGyn initiated a quality improvement project in 2017 with the ultimate goal of decreasing medical student refusal. Biocards were created in 2021 as a student identification tool to introduce a patient to the medical student prior to their interaction. Biocards are given to the patient to improve the patient’s perception of the student on the team. The contents of the biocard includes the name and pronouns of each student as well as their professional photo, three fun facts of their choice, their primary learning goal for the clerkship, project introduction, and a short thank you to the patient. The nurse or medical assistant gives the biocard to each patient upon rooming for them to read and familiarize themselves with the medical student. The patient is then asked whether they feel comfortable with the medical student taking part in their care.
