Objective: As educators, we see learners struggling with issues around time management, test taking abilities, professionalism, etc. Are we equipped to systematically think through the common etiologies to correctly diagnose and implement a treatment plan for our struggling learner?
Methods: Introductions and background: We will review published literature citing the scope of the problem for UME and GME learners and share the differential diagnosis model to consider underlying problems experienced by struggling learners. (10 minutes)
Small Group activity: Each group will analyze a case of a struggling learner and identify the learner’s diagnosis. (10 minutes)
Large group share: We will discuss this systematic method of analysis. (10 minutes)
The next challenge of the learner feedback session will be how to give the learner feedback of the underlying diagnosis and develop the plan of action. (10 minutes)
Small Group activity: Each group will review the 2nd part of their previous case which will give the first portion of the feedback session. Groups will be asked to continue learner discussion by sharing the underlying concerns and create a plan of action. (10 minutes)
Large group discussion: Groups will share what went well and what were challenges. (15 minutes)
Wrap Up and Q&A: Take home points and the take home products will be reviewed. (10 minutes)
Interactive Component: Polling platform, small and large group discussions
Take Home Product: Both electronic and paper copies of the differential diagnosis model and plan of action worksheet will be given.
Conclusion/ Discussion: Use a systematic approach to diagnose your struggling learner as developed by author Jeanette Guerrasio, MD. Knowing this will set a successful course of action.
