Purpose: A multi-institutional, resident-driven, academic podcast was created as part of an educational initiative in order to maintain academic integrity, pursue a novel platform for education, and support a sense of togetherness in the face of a global pandemic.
Background: In the wake of the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, residency programs were challenged to rapidly adjust their curricula. “Morning Report” has played a vital role throughout many Obstetrics & Gynecology (OBGYN) residencies. Studies have shown that trainees value these sessions for their clinical teachings, development of physician identities and camaraderie building. Additionally, residents have emphasized the importance of leading and preparing interactive discussions for their colleagues. As daily education transitioned to intermittent virtual meetings, residents faced the challenge of sustaining their academic training.
Methods: Fifteen episodes across four OBGYN military training
sites were created as part of a quality improvement educational initiative.
Pre- and post- initiative surveys were distributed to assess the attitudes and
perceptions of morning report and the newly implemented podcast episodes.
Episodes were drafted by residents and included a combination of trainee and
staff involvement. An interactive discussion forum was available with each
episode.
Results: Eighty percent of residents reported that COVID-19 had negatively impacted their amount of consistent teaching opportunities. Post-initiative, 82% and 89% of residents reported that creating and/or listening to the episodes were valuable to their education, respectively.
Discussions: This innovative, resident-driven, academic podcast successfully fostered an interactive and educational environment during COVID-19. Graduate medical education will undoubtedly continue to change, and this novel tool offers sustainable potential.
