Sunscreen for Your Soul: Using KISSes and SMARTs to support learners’ wellness

Objective: Wellness has finally found a place in the sun in GME, but efforts in UME are dawning.  Data show that entering clerkships is one of the most difficult transitions in medical school, yet little is done to support these learners. This workshop will introduce a way to Keep It Simple, Silly— supporting learner wellness without yoga, crafts, or displacing educational programming.

Workshop Agenda: In the shadows:
•  We will review wellness efforts in academic medicine and data on medical students entering clinical environs, with a glimpse at the proposed intervention. (5 min)
•  Finding the light: Realms of wellness will be introduced, and participants will work individually and in tables to clarify their priorities and current performance. (15 min)
•  Radiating sunbeams: We will briefly review SMART goal structure.  Participants will draft a SMART goal targeted to their identified priorities.  In dyads, participants will refine the goals. (20 min)
•  Shining bright: Volunteers will share examples with the large group for further refinement and idea generation.  (15 min)
•  Nurturing the glow: We will demonstrate how this process can be offered in clerkships with no additional training and minimal time to allow learners to tailor wellness efforts to their own needs and reinforce faculty commitment to supporting their wellness. (15 min)
•  Wrap up/questions  (5 min)

Interactive Component:
Wellness realm clarification and self-evaluation, SMART goal creation and refinement, delivery method brainstorming

Take Home Product: Participants will leave with knowledge, practice, and a slide deck template for introducing wellness realms and SMART goals within their clerkships.
