Objective: Develop a model MS4 elective designed to prepare medical students for OB/GYN residency by using a comprehensive needs assessment to guide curricular development, focus resource allocation and maximize student experience.
Study Design: A web- based needs assessment survey was created, piloted and administered to current MS4 students, PGY1 and PGY2 OB/GYN residents. The survey assessed technical, procedural, and patient management skills and included several open ended items to capture additional areas students perceive as curricular deficiencies.
Results: 34 surveys were sent out and 27 were returned for a response rate of 79.4 %. Writing orders, management of shoulder dystocia and eclampsia, and repairing episiotomy/lacerations were the most common deficiencies noted. A preliminary curriculum (developed from program director, faculty and resident input) has been modified as a result of this project. 2 hours of content was deleted, and new sessions addressing common deficiencies identified above were added. 100% of respondents were likely/very likely to enroll in such a course if offered at their institution.
Conclusions: Implementation of an MS4 elective curriculum preparing students for OB/GYN residency is needed and would greatly benefit students. Results of our comprehensive needs assessment survey have been used to create a low cost, low fidelity OB/GYN residency preparation curriculum which address the challenges of our specialty, the needs of our students, and hopefully can become a model for other medical schools across the country.
