Objective/ Background: Participants in this workshop will be able to:
- Identify and combat microaggressions that URiM trainees may face at work
- Differentiate cultures of inclusivity from diversity in name only
- Understand how repeated episodes of discrimination contribute to URiM burnout
- Provide trainees substantive, constructive feedback without perpetuating racism and bias
- Advocate for their institutions to foster inclusivity for minority trainees
Methods: Part 1: Case-based group discussions
- Presenters will share personal stories of discrimination they endured at work
- Audience will be interrogate the aspects of each case determining what went wrong, what could be done differently, and how to prevent such encounters in the future.
Part 2: Creating an anti-racist residency training environment
- Presenters will share ways training programs can support URiM trainees and foster truly inclusive environments
- Small group and large group discussions on best practices in creating anti-racist environments.
