Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program Websites: Opportunities to Improve Communication to Prospective Applicants

Purpose: To characterize information on residency program websites and differences between university-based, community-based university-affiliated, and community-based program websites.

Background: With program signaling available now in OBGYN, it is important to ascertain what data is available for residency applicants.

Methods: All 290 OBGYN residency program websites were reviewed for content by two authors. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, 2-tailed t-tests, and analyses of variance.

Results: Among 290 programs, 158/290 (54.5%) described alumni trajectories;107/290 (36.9%) included guidance for United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 1 scores; 53/290 (18.3%) included guidance for Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination Level 1 scores; 185/290 (63.8%) included international applicant guidance; and 84/290 (29.0%) included a diversity, equity, and inclusion statement. University-based programs were more likely to include a variety of information compared to community-based university-affiliated and community-based programs, including alumni trajectories (73.2% of university-based, 45.9% of community-based university-affiliated, and 30.4% of community-based; p< 0.0001); United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 1 score guidance (47.2% of university-based, 32.4% of community-based university-affiliated, and 23.2% of community-based; p=0.0039); and diversity, equity, and inclusion statements (46.3% of university-based, 17.1% of community-based university-affiliated, and 14.3% of community-based; p< 0.0001).

Discussions: Residency website content can be improved to help applicants decide where to apply and send program signals. Currently, university-based program websites are more likely to include a variety of information compared to community-based university-affiliated and community-based program websites.
