Objective: With the United States Supreme Court’s decision in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case announced in June 2022, the fall of federal protections of abortion was anticipated thus creating a post-Roe reality throughout much of the country. We share our experiences as complex family planning subspecialists practicing in academic centers in Ohio and Arizona adapting to this new landscape.
Methods: Workshop will include case studies with curated resources from entities such as: Society of Family Planning; The Kenneth J. Ryan Residency Training Program; Physicians for Reproductive Health; American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists; If/When/How. We will focus on: 1) familiarization with techniques, safety, and complications of self-managed abortion 2) strategies for interdisciplinary collaboration with colleagues in Emergency Departments and Urgent Care 3) messaging and documentation to avoid stigma and criminalization of patients due to electronic health record documentation.
Results: Participants will have break-out sessions in small groups to share their experiences, strategize areas for interventions
Conclusion/ Discussion: Abortion bans disproportionately affect people of color, low income individuals, and sexual minorities. This workshop aims to center the needs of these most-vulnerable patients.
