Objective: \"Participants will learn to apply a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) lens at the UME, GME and Faculty level to identify opportunities for actionable change addressing systemic racism and promoting inclusion of URM individuals. Using DEI and Backward Design principles, participants will discuss how to tackle those opportunities, recognizing that DEI efforts encompass recruitment process and thoughtful planning to shift mindset, culture and processes within program.

Methods: while inclusion is being asked to dance” Harvard Business Review 2017. Over the past five years, there has been an acceleration of concerns and efforts to recognize and accommodate diversity, equity and inclusion. DEI policies and practices have been developed and implemented in response to protests by affected individuals. There is a growing but sparse literature on recruitment and retention of URM trainees at the UME and GME level. Most of efforts stop at recruitment and few have focused on retention. Evidence shows that such efforts generally fail and lead to minimal long-term changes.\"
Results: Using vignettes, participants lead by the presenters will identifying DEI opportunities, and discussing actionable solutions in small group. The participants will use the higher education teaching framework of Backward Design to address the vignette in addition to CPR framework, speaking up and storytelling to navigate the vignette.
Conclusion/ Discussion: The participants will analyze various situations encountered by groups under represented in medicine and create actionable solutions.

The resulting increase in the number of URM trainees who successfully complete their training, and URM faculty who progress through their tenure translates into increased representation in academia with resulting change in the learning environment and dismantling of systemic racism; as well as increase URM providers in the community, a key component in addressing healthcare disparities.
