Purpose: To analyze and reflect on one year\'s growth of a virtual learning podcast created by residents for residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Background: Over one year ago, a single military Gynecologic Surgery & Obstetrics (GS&O) residency program implemented a resident-driven podcast to supplement academics during the COVID-19 pandemic. Six months into the development of this initiative, additional military GS&O residency programs were invited to collaborate. Residents and staff involved in creating episodes were given a survey to complete in order to assess the feasibility and sustainability of this expansion.
Methods: All GS&O residency programs were invited to participate in developing episodes. Each episode created was distributed to all programs. A survey was then administered to the residents and/or staff involved in the development of episodes after 6 months of collaboration.
Results: The original podcast at a single institution created 15 episodes as part of a quality improvement, educational initiative. Six months into the project’s initiation in March 2020, a total of 5 residency programs had created episodes. Six of the ten podcast developers responded to the survey. Fifty percent stated it was “very easy” and 33.3% stated it was “easy” to develop episode content. Eighty-three percent of respondents stated they “strongly agreed” that drafting episodes were beneficial to both their education and development of teaching skills. Finally, 83% reported it was “very easy” to physically record the episodes.
Discussions: A once single-institutional project has expanded to include several GS&O residency programs. Given the feasibility, ease, and reported educational benefit of this project, our future goals include continuing collaboration, increasing publicity, improving ease of access to episodes, and further analyzing its overall benefit.
