Flashcards for Future Physicians: Analysis of Obstetrics and Gynecology ANKI Cards

Purpose: To analyze the digital ANKI flashcards available to clerkship students preparing for the obstetrics and gynecology (ob/gyn) shelf examination

Background: ANKI is a virtual flashcard application that relies on the effectiveness of spaced repetition and active recall as a study technique. The thoroughness and accessibility of existing decks make it a widely used resource for the ob/gyn shelf examination.

Methods: Four pre-made decks (Zanki Step 2, AnKing Step 2, Uwise, Kaplan) were downloaded from an online social news aggregation web platform (Reddit). The ob/gyn specific cards were then isolated utilizing the tags associated with each card. Univariate analysis was performed.

Results: A total of 4098 ANKI cards are geared towards ob/gyn shelf preparation. Of these, Zanki Step 2 deck has 621 (11.55% of 5374); AnKing Step 2 has 1385 cards (17% of 9115); 1426 Kaplan cards (12% of 12,236 cards) are specific to our subspeciality. The UWise deck has a total of 666 cards adopted from the Uwise pre-shelf exam question bank released by the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO). Among these, Uwise and Kaplan cards are in question-and-answer format.

Discussions: Educators should be aware of existing virtual learning options for medical students. Digital flashcards are popular among medical students and are being used widely. Our next step in research would be to conduct a content analysis for accuracy and validity of these cards. This may inform development of new standardized educational flashcards for the next generation of physicians.
