Purpose: To trial the use of APGO effective preceptor series videos as the core of an educational session in a virtual meeting format for incoming resident physicians in OB/GYN, Pediatrics and Internal Medicine, “Residents as Teachers” of medical students and physician assistant students.
Background: Common concepts in medical education translate across specialties and levels of training. Materials such as the APGO Effective Preceptor Series, could be expected to be effective for use with resident physicians across specialties.
Methods: Zoom meeting with PowerPoint presentation entitled “Residents as Teachers” was presented to a multispecialty group of first year residents. The presentation included two APGO Effective Preceptor Series videos: EPS-2 Teaching Strategies for the Ambulatory Setting and EPS-5 Providing Educational Feedback. Just in time educational slides in PowerPoint designed as “photo opportunity” for residents to capture with their cell phones and keep for later reference. Live Mentimeter survey post presentation to assess the short-term impact of the presentation on resident physician self-assessment of their knowledge.
Results: Post Lecture Survey Summary on a 5-point Likert Scale, Strongly Disagree 1 to Strongly Agree 5,
I learned something about teaching MD student and PA student learners. 4.5/5.0 Nf14
I learned something about giving effective feedback to MD student and PA student learners. 4.4/5.0 Nf14
