Getting the Right Crew: Recruiting Medical Students Underrepresented in Medicine to OB/Gyn Residency

Objective: Diversifying the Ob/Gyn physician workforce is a critical component of eliminating the devastating social injustice and healthcare inequities that exist in the United States. This workshop will discuss ways to implement departmental diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and will discuss ways to develop strategies for mentoring students underrepresented in medicine (URM) and strategies for recruiting URM students to your residency program.

Methods: Introduction and opening discussion of importance of diversity, equity and inclusion (20 Minutes)

Break-out group with discussion of potential solutions to mentor more URM Students in Ob/Gyn followed by presentation back to large group. (25 minutes- interactive)

Break-out group discussion of challenges and potential solutions for recruiting URMS to your residency program followed by presentation back to large group. (25 minutes- interactive)

Discussion of best practices to recruit URM Students to your residency program, including discussion on faculty development and ally-ship. (20 minutes)

Results: Participants should be able to have an open discussion regarding experiences with diversity, equity and inclusion in their home institutions.  Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion and how institutional culture directly impacts ability to recruit URM students.  During the session, participants will develop best practices/solutions for mentoring and recruiting URM students and retaining URM residents and faculty.  Participants should become more comfortable with having potentially uncomfortable conversations.

Conclusion/ Discussion: This workshop is aimed at developing strategies to mentor URM students towards choosing and matching in Ob/Gyn. Individual residency programs should be able to improve their ability recruit URM students by identifying and addressing barriers that exist in programs. It is our hope that these strategies can be used to continue to diversify the physician work force and that a diverse work force will help improve disparities in women’s health.
