Transition to Practice Podcast: An Innovative Resource for Military Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Graduates

Purpose: To develop a novel podcast available for military Obstetrics & Gynecology (OBGYN) residency graduates in order to support their transition to independent practice.

Background: Residency graduates are expected to transition to independent clinical practice upon completion of an OBGYN training program. Furthermore, unique to the military, junior physicians quickly transition to practicing in remote locations with limited resources while balancing leadership and collateral responsibilities. Several survey studies conducted within general surgery and anesthesia programs have identified a lack of confidence among residency graduates when transitioning to practice, as well as a paucity of practice management training to include resource allocation, implementing quality improvement efforts, hospital staffing, and financial planning. Although transition to practice seminars have historically been implemented in military residency programs, to our knowledge, no current resource exists for recent OBGYN recent trainees to support their transition to independent military practice.

Methods: A podcast-planning and development committee recruited military OBGYN providers to speak on behalf of their experiences to an intended audience of junior providers, including chief residents and physicians up to five years post residency.

Results: Using a commercial recording software program, a pilot episode was created, entitled “Practicing Outside of the Continental United States (OCONUS)”, with plans for future episodes including hospital leadership, board collection, and military promotion.

Discussions: To support recent military OBGYN residency graduates in their transition from training to independent practice, a pilot podcast series has been initiated, with the intention to foster a supportive culture of togetherness through diverse experiences.
