Training Our Successors: Developing Medical Student Educational Scholarship
Objective: Medical educational scholarship is a fundamental aspect of the dissemination of innovative practices and is an important component of career development and promotion. Medical educators in obstetrics and gynecology, especially at the undergraduate medical education level, often are unable to publish their educational innovations, with time and experience often cited as the major barriers to publication. Medical students can be valuable contributing members to scholarship projects, particularly as participants in those educational programs. This interactive session will review strategies for enabling medical students to successfully contribute to the dissemination of educational scholarship.
• Learning Objectives:
• Review principles of educational scholarship
• Understand unique challenges medical educators face in the promotions process
• Describe methods for including medical students in educational scholarship
Workshop Agenda: • Introduction and Background: Introduction to principles of educational scholarship including Kern’s conceptual framework of instructional design and the educational research process. 10 minutes
• Inclusion of Medical Students: Discussing best practices for identifying interested students, and strategies for integrating students onto the educational research team. 10 minutes
• Small Group Discussions: Participants will brainstorm 3-5 educational research questions that they could address at their home institutions, and next steps for involving medical students in these initiatives. 15 minutes
• Large Group Report Outs:15 minutes
• Strategies for success and examples from authors’ institutions and experiences: 10 minutes
• Concluding Remarks: 5 minutes
