Shade & Sunscreen- Enhancing Psychological Safety to Prevent Learner Mistreatment
Objective: After more than 50 years of implicit tolerance, mistreatment of medical learners has risen to the forefront as a modifiable threat to wellbeing and performance. This workshop will review challenges in creating and sustaining a psychologically safe learning environment and introduce techniques from medicine and business to effect culture change. We will practice these strategies and develop individual goals and followup to establish environments that prevent learner mistreatment.
Workshop Agenda: • The burn in the background: We will provide background on mistreatment in medical education and review data-driven efforts to combat this problem through culture change in the learning environment (10 min)
• Changes in latitude: Tables will identify barriers to psychologically safe learning environments at their own institutions. Participants will categorize common challenges to safety (20 min).
• Changes in attitude: We will introduce elements of established programs that promote psychological safety. (10 min)
• An ounce of prevention: Groups will apply these models to identify specific tactics to implement at their institutions to create an interprofessional approach to psychological safety. (15 min).
• A pound of cure: Groups will share their strategies and goals, completing an auto-generated email reminder system for accountability over the next 12 months (15 min).
• Wrap up and questions (5 min)
Interactive Component: Table discussion of challenges, group categorization thereof, application of tools to individual cases, and sharing of these plans
Take Home Product: Participants will leave with concrete strategies and individual plans to create culture change to help prevent mistreatment.
