Medical Student Simulation: More than just hand sanitizer for cleansing the curriculum

Objective/Background: This workshop will demonstrate the successful implementation
of simulation in OBGYN medical education at three different institutions and provide a structure for
incorporating simulation into the clerkship. Simulation is a versatile teaching modality to develop
clinical, teamwork and communication skills through experiential learning. Simulation can also be used
for feedback and assessment. Simulation is becoming a critical tool for education of medical students in
the field of OBGYN. Barriers exist to fully implementing simulation into clerkships and residency
preparation courses, including cost, faculty, and equipment. This session will provide strategies for
design and implementation of simulation for programs of varying size and resources.
Agenda: In this interactive workshop, the presenters will highlight their simulation curricula used in the
OBGYN clerkship and residency preparation courses from orientation to assessment including
summaries of their simulation programs, scenarios, and use of both high- and low-fidelity simulators.
Participants will then engage in group discussions and multiple hands-on activities to design
personalized simulation curricula. Presenters will also offer tips for overcoming barriers to
implementation.
Interactive Component: Participants will work in small groups to 1) construct innovative simulationbased
educational programs 2) identify common barriers to implementation and discuss strategies for
overcoming those barriers 3) practice facilitating low-fidelity simulations and debriefing techniques with
expert feedback
Take Home Product: Participants will be provided with a simulation toolkit of sample agendas,
templates, and scenarios including learning objectives, simulation set-up and assessment tools. Armed
with strategies for overcoming barriers, participants will be ready for implementation at their home
institution.
