Meeting Recap: 2020 CREOG & APGO Annual Meeting
The Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) and the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) welcomed more than 1,200 obstetrics and gynecology educators and administrators February 26-29 in Orlando, Florida for the 2020 CREOG & APGO Annual Meeting. This year, the theme was, The Future is Back. The program, helmed by Co-Chairs Maria Manriquez, MD, and Lori Berkowitz, MD, offered attendees new perspectives and fresh tips on health equity, the UME-GME Transition, patient safety, well-being and more.
General Session and Plenary Speakers
The meeting started off with two plenary talks: “Leadership and Risk Taking: Taking Risks and Loving It” from Deborah German, MD, and “Pursuing Excellence: The Challenge of Innovation in Medical Education” by John Andrews, MD. The General Session concluded with a panel discussion led by APGO President Maya Hammoud, MD, MBA, and CREOG Chair Mark Woodland, MS, MD, “Speak Up and Imagine: Changes in the Residency Match.”
Other plenary sessions included “The Psychology of Critical Thinking: Tools, Tips and Techniques to Help You Think at Your Best” from Claudia Fernandez, DrPH, MS, RD, LDN, and “We Can Agree: Nobody Starts the Day Wanting to Do a Bad Job! Getting Us to Our Best Days Through Communication, Innovation and Critical Thinking” from AnnaMarie Connolly, MD. The Medical Student Educators’ Luncheon, presented by APGO’s Undergraduate Medical Education Committee (UMEC), featured Merry-Jennifer Markham, MD, who delivered “Social Media for Medical Education and Professional Development.” The Saturday morning session focused on Education and Scholarship and began with the plenary “Leading. Changing. Growing.” By Maureen Phipps, MD, MPH.
Awards & Graduation Luncheon
The Friday luncheon is an opportunity to recognize and congratulate commitment to professional development and excellence in medical education. The ASL and SES graduating classes received their certificates in the graduation ceremony. Former APGO president Roger Smith, MD, was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. The winner of the inaugural Donna Wachter Clerkship Coordinator Award was L. Renata Vicari of Harvard Medical School.
Special Events
The Exhibit Hall officially opened Wednesday evening with the Welcome Reception, where attendees could network with friends and colleagues while checking out all the exhibitors had to offer. It also marked the launch of the joint APGO and ACOG Foundation online auction, which lasted until Saturday, and benefitted the APGO Medical Education Endowment Fund and the CREOG Empower Fund. On Thursday, APGO hosted the Alumni Bash at the Main Event, where attendees gathered for bowling, billiards and fun with friends and colleagues.
